Byron Bay, New South Wales
I spent four days at Byron Bay on this trip. It rained the whole time…so I had plenty of time to go scouting for good locations, but no photos to show for it. Then on the day I left, the sun finally came out. I raced down to the beach at one of the spots I thought would make a good photo, and there was this pelican waiting for his photo opportunity!
A lady was jogging, and I asked her to go around wide so she wouldn’t scare the pelican away. She told me this bird meets the same fisherman on the beach every morning. They do a little fishing and then go their separate ways.
I took some photo in colour but they didn’t look right, but the shots I took in black & white had real character. This photo was taken on black & white film – it not just a colour shot that has been converted. I have always liked this photo and it is one of my most popular black & white images.
