On the afternoon I took this photo, I was planning to stay around to capture the soft colours of the sunset behind the rocks. I arrived early, and I was not about to just sit around all afternoon waiting for the sun to go down.
When you shoot landscapes in colour, you usually want to wait until very late in the day to get the softest colours from the sunlight. Black and White photography is different. Subtle colours mean nothing; it is all about the contrast. So many subjects are better photographed when the sun is higher in the sky and the contrast is stronger.
I had some black & white film, so I shot this photo which really shows the power of strong lines and shapes, with extra contrast, in black and white photography. The dramatic character of the shot works because it is a monochrome; if it was in colour it would look too glary.
Later I put colour film in as the sunset approached, and got the shot below.
All in all…not a bad afternoon’s work. Hope you like the shots. Don’t forget to visit my website at http://www.naturesimage.com.au

Nice photos, I’m putting a black and white image of the apostles up tomorrow; today was the Cape Otway lighthouse.
